When it comes to holiday eating at social events, the choices can be overwhelming. Most holiday foods are laden with fat and calories that might railroad your healthy eating plan. If you do not have a plan, it is easy to overindulge. The good news is that with some preparation you could stick with your weight loss regimen and even treat yourself to a few desserts without packing on the pounds this year!

Top Tips

1. Eat before the party.

2. Do not stand near the food table.

3. Always use a plate and utensils.

4. Make sure healthy options will be available.

5. Do not deny yourself.

6. Avoid beverages with calories.

7. Focus on activities other than eating.

8. Pair up!

9. Limit high fat items.

10. Maintain perspective!

The Top 10 in Detail

1. Eat before the party. Try not to go to a party hungry. The thought process of saving calories throughout the day and indulging later does not work. This plan will cause excessive hunger and may lead to binge eating at the party. After gastric bypass this behavior will put you at risk for dumping syndrome while adjustable gastric band patients increase risk of blockage or obstruction. Try eating a cheese stick, piece of fruit, yogurt, or protein bar before the event.

2. Do not stand near the food table. If you are socializing with friends or family, mingle in a room that does not contain food. Never stand over the food table or kitchen island which may lead to unconscious nibbling.

3. Always use a plate and utensils. Make a conscious effort to put any foods that you consume onto a plate and use a fork, knife, or spoon to consume. Finger foods are easy to unconsciously over consume. Do not feel obligated to be a member of the "clean plate club". It is acceptable to leave a few bites behind every time.

4. Make sure healthy options will be available. Offer to bring a healthy dish such as a fruit or vegetable tray or low fat/low calorie dessert.

5. Do not deny yourself. Closely evaluate the food choices. Choose 2-3 of your favorite foods and eat 3 bites of each. Remember to put these on a plate, use utensils, and no second helpings. The "3-bite plan" can work for desserts too. Choose your favorite and allow yourself a bit of indulgence without the guilt. beverage

6. Avoid beverages with calories. Holiday drinks and alcoholic beverages can be loaded with calories. Margaritas, white Russians, egg nog, and hot chocolate can contain up to 500 calories per 8 ounce serving. Stick with sugar free products, water, or artificially sweetened beverages that do not contribute to unnecessary calories. Try to drink a full glass of water between each alcoholic or calorie containing beverage.

7. Focus on activities other than eating. Many holiday events revolve solely around food. Limit the amount of time you and your family spend engaged in eating. Plan activities such as board games, card games, gift exchanges, and other activities that do not involve food.

8. Pair up! Find someone else who is attending the party who has similar weight loss goals. Use each other for accountability to stay on track.

9. Limit high fat items. Fat is more calorically dense than carbohydrate or protein products so by reducing fat you can usually cut calories. Watch out for fried foods, cream-based soups, casseroles, pies, processed meats, pastries and baked goods.

10. Maintain perspective! Overeating one day will not break your diet. If you over indulge and slide off track, do not panic. Stop the behavior immediately and get back on the program. Consider this as a learning experience and brainstorm ways on how to prevent it from happening again in the near future.

Three Overlooked Tips On How To Lose Weight

When it comes to weight loss and fitness, you will never run out of tips and tricks. In fact, the reason why the fitness and weight loss indutry is booming every year is because, the market is simply huge, and with billions of people who are probably either overweight or obese, the number is even bigger than that of malnourished people. Surely, losing weight is a huge topic. And because you'll never run out of tips, it is confusing. So here are the tips on how to lose weight - which worked for me, at least.

1. Change the daily food intake. I know it sounds easy, but if you stop and look at the food labels, it can make you aware of what you actually put inside your body. MSG, saturated fats, sugar and other preservatives are what you consume on a daily basis as you eat processed and manufactured food. If you don't know about it, do some actual research on the internet on how to read food labels. I learned that one of the best things you can do to stay away from these kinds of unhealthy and fattening foods is to change the way they're cooked. Stop frying foods and instead, prepare them by roasting, grilling, broiling and the like.

Another thing you can do is getting rid of the unhealthy food that you used to eat from your ref. A lot of us probably eat out of boredom. Watching TV sounds fun if you have some popcorns and soda at your side. If you surf the 'net, it will be nice to munch on your favorite high-carb snack, probably cookies. We tend to grab some food from the ref when we're doing some sedentary activity. But the mindless eating you do are what cause you to pack on pounds that you will find hard to lose.

If you think you're hungry, drink some water instead. Wait for twenty minutes and see if you're really hungry. If you are, grab a healthier alternative, like apples or salad.

2. Get moving daily. Exercise is not overlooked, because after all, you have heard left and right how important physical activity is. But I'll include it anyway.

3. Avoid snacking on high-calorie food. One of the reasons why there are people who complain of their weight is because they unmindfully eat something when they are bored, lonely, depressed, or have another helping in between meals, for something like a cookie, a bar of chocolate, or ice cream. Try something else when you are bored or when you're lonely. Replace these high-calorie desserts with something healthier, like fruits. But beware, though, because you might think that eating lots of them will not make you fat. Anything you eat in excess will add more calories to your weight, which in turn lead to excessive pounds.

These are the three things that helped me eliminate the pounds I had before. I know there are many other tips on how to lose weight, but basically, if you want to lose weight, the above advice are just some you should do.

Why You Should Lose Weight By Walking

Lose weight by walking! While there are so many kinds of exercises that are designed to build more muscles, create more abs and other purposes, walking is a good form of exercise if you want to simply lose weight. Yes, that's right. If you have a flabby stomach, are lazy enough to go to the gym or are simply too busy working, then walking is probably the best form of exercise for you. Here are the reasons why you should start walking to lose weight.

1. It's free. As stated above, if you want to start your weight loss quest but are discouraged because you think you should go to the gym or own some fitness equipment, you are wrong. You can simply start exercising by walking. You don't have to commute or drive your car, which both cost you some money and of course, time. Walking is free, absolutely free. With walking, you don't need to go to expensive gyms to start. You just have to go outside wearing your shoes and your usual get-up, and start walking!

2. Anyone can do it. Almost anyone can walk, without having to pay for a gym membership or buying a fitness machine. It does not even matter if you are young or old. Unlike other forms of exercise, walking is so easy to do. You don't have to life weights, run on a treadmill or perform other heart-pounding, rigourous exercises. Since it's been a part of almost everyone's routine, we don't notice just how beneficial it is. So instead of using your car to make short trips, why don't you walk every now and then.

3. It's available, anytime. You don't have to drive all the way to the gym after work to get the best exercise for your weight. You can start walking, wherever you are. You can forego your car for awhile and walk to a convenience store, or to your office, if it's nearby. That means taking advantage of every opportunity you get to walk and lose weight.

4. It's good for the health. Any type of exercise is good for the health, of course. But with walking, almost anyone can do it anytime, when he wishes. Walking can ease someone when he's troubled. It's good against serious conditions like
coronary heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. Walking is recommended to those who had just recovered from heart disease or stroke.

Walking helps anyone sleep better at night. It increases cognitive performance, improves breathing, reduces blood pressure, fights depression, helps in preventing osteoporosis, reduces the risk of diabetes and enhances immune system. Since it helps improve blood circulation, it has a good overall effect on the body and contributes to general well-being.

Over all, you can lose weight by walking but, I suggest that you also perform some cardio activity to make the best of your weight loss efforts. Increase the intensity and progress in time as you get used to your routine, and make sure that you diversify your exercises weekly. Break down large meals into a few smaller ones, eat food high in fiber and drink plenty of water.

All of us would love to improve our physical appearance by having a flat stomach. There are, however, a lot of exercise regimens that need to be followed and sometimes, you cannot fit these into your daily routine. Food intake, on the other hand, is also one of the concerns in having a flat abs.

This will just bring much confusion on the food that you should consume just to maintain or attain a flat stomach. But, be confused no more because the facets of nutrition that are discussed below will help you acquire the flat abs that everyone wants to have. This will mainly tackle a trendy diet on how to lose belly fat. So, get ready to dig deep into these nutritional facts.

Let us begin with the lean protein to be included in your diet. Based on researches and studies done by nutrition experts, protein has a thermal effect that is higher than that of the fats and carbohydrates. This is why they burn more easily upon digestion. In addition, proteins are the building blocks in building and maintaining toned muscles.

Lean protein can be followed by fiber rich foods. The sources of fibers are fruits, vegetables and unrefined grains. Fibers help to delay your glycemic response to your food intake which is beneficial for getting lean. This will not contribute to the accumulation of visceral fats in between your internal organs that is more often than not the reason why your tummy is sticking out.

Fats, in contrast, must not be totally avoided. Too low an intake of fat will have a negative effect on your health as it will lower hormone levels. This will result in more food cravings. Nuts, seeds, olive oil, nut butters, organic meat, avocados and eggs are the sources of good fats that should be incorporated into a healthy diet.

And finally, you should pass up on trans fats that are made artificially which are found in shortening, margarine and hydrogenated oils, the common ingredients of the majority of processed foods. Additionally, you must also avoid high levels of fructose found in most sweetened products. Avoiding these products will surely lessen the offenders to your health and the contributors to your belly fats.

Dealing with these four key elements of losing belly fats will eventually lead you to be in total charge of how flat your abs can be. Remember, there are no enchanted formulas on how to lose belly fat but having a full understanding on the nutrition to be taken would make an enchanting body out of all your efforts!
